What is Permaculture?

Permaculture is a term used to describe permanent agriculture or permanent culture. It is a design system that allows us to work with the Planet rather than against it to provide for our needs, not just food. It allows us to find synergistic ways to develop food production using minimal energy input and while doing so actually improve the soils and environment.
it differs greatly from our existing food production methods where there is a great energy input, In fact for every calorie that we eat it requires ten to produce using current methods. With considerations such as peak oil and the rising cost of fuel it will not be long before we cannot afford to buy the food produced in this way. Modern methods are also very destructive. Soils are being decimated as are insects and other tiny lifeforms crucial for the survival of the human race.
Somewhere along the line we have forgotten that we actually evolved on this planet with countless other species, each with their own little niche, each one important in their own right. With our obsession to dominate Nature we need to relearn that we are part of nature. We can never be separated from it. We can hide in our homes and in our cars but we still have to breathe, eat and drink all of which are provided by the very Planet we are radically changing. Surely it makes sense to work with the Planet rather than against it.
